The department of Psychiatric Social work in this institute was  opened in the year 1997. The department  got recognition as teaching department affiliated to Ranchi University w.e.f. 1st April 1998. Presently the department is running postgraduate M.Phil and Ph.D courses in Psychiatric Social Work.  Apart from the teaching and training programme, the department is actively involved in clinical, research, rehabilitation, community mental health, extension services and outreach programmes etc.

Some of the major clinical responsibilities of the department include

(a)     Some of the major therapeutic services include Social Work intervention i.e. practice of Social Case Work, Social Group Work/Group Therapy, Community Organization in community mental health programmes and extension services, counselling services, family intervention and family therapy, home visits, social skills training etc. The department also organizes socio-cultural, religious, sports and recreational prgrammes for indoor patients.

(b)     Attending  patients  in Out and In-patient department for  intake interview, case work up, Social history taking for assessing family dynamics & other socio-cultural environmental factors etc.

(c)     Organizing and supervising group meetings in the wards as a form of social group work, one of the primary methods of social work.

(d)     Motivating and encouraging patients to attend O.P.D. for diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative purposes so that they may feel themselves productive and they may not become liabilities to the family once discharged from the hospital and as such they are well accepted in family, community and society as well.

Teaching and training activities / assignments include imparting instruction in formal class through lectures, group discussions, individual and group conferences, field supervision and demonstration, topic discussion and supervising M.Phil trainees and PhD. scholars to present and discuss papers on assigned topics and present cases during academic programmes of the institute. The department also imparts advance training in psychiatric social work to the MSW students placed here from other professional institutions / universities from time to time for their block field work training. The department has also organized professional workshops on orientation programme for prospective professional social workers.

The department takes active part in various research activities independently and also in liaison with other departments of this institute.  Some of the faculty members of the department were invited as visiting/guest faculty and external examiner in different institutions/organizations and universities and also member of “Expert Committee” for some of the schools of social work for curriculum development.Some of the faculty members are in the editorial board of various journals

The psychiatric social workers posted in various wards screen the patients and send them to occupational therapy unit to regain their impaired and lost capacities so that when they go back to the community they are no more considered as a burden for others. One psychiatric social worker is posted in the occupational therapy unit to monitor and supervise the activities carried out by the patients. Efforts are made to guide them suitably according to their capabilities to develop their optimum level of skills and capacities to lead a productive life in the community after discharge from the hospital.

  1. Socio-demographic variables as prognostic indicators for schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder: A prospective study.

  3. A prevalence study of risk factor of alcohol and drug use: The role of psychological variables in predicting the frequency of substance use among school going children of Ranchi city.
  4. A study of social support, coping strategies and family interaction pattern among spouses and individuals with alcohol abuse.
  5. Impact of illness on life satisfaction, social well being and sexuality in person with epilepsy: A comparative study.
  6. Severity of Violence and quality of life of women with psychiatric illness as compared to normal controls.
